“Every once in awhile, the turtles that hold up California argue. . . ”
(Gabrieleno myth)

Natural Blue
Chusien Chang in collaboration with Iren Jensen

A turtle constructed of local river rocks bearing a Chumash design in natural pigments (soot, chalk, berries) recalls a Gabrielino children’s story of creation, water, and earthquakes.

Chusien Chang has created sculpture for 15 years; most works are primarily site-specific. Iren Jensen was born and raised in Norway. Since 1996, she has focused her work on women’s issues, in addition to social and ecological concerns.

Betty Phoenix Wan creates an image of birdseed on the riverbanks where she played as a child. The snake is a symbol of infinity, a visual metaphor for the river/flow/shape. Betty Phoenix Wan is a mixed-media installation artist.
