Bear were reportedly seen along the riverbank as late
as the 1930s and steelhead trout were caught in the river in 1940. The
river has concrete banks for 94 percent of its course. This stretch
is one of the few soft-bottomed segments of the river.
Lorraine Cleary is a mixed-media installation
artist whose work includes a focus on environmental deterioration.
Her series of fabric flags along various portions of the fence at the
site portrayed indigenous wildlife as it is affected by water quality.

The Mothering Tree Karen Schwenkmeyer
hung time cards with images of home appliances and text
detailing the labor required by parenting. Schwenkmeyer co-founded
M.A.M.A. to produce work with other artist-mothers.

Aristide Maillols 1939 sculpture The
River inspired Deborah Krall and Juliet Musso to construct
a life-sized, living topiary from non-invasive plants. A woman rises,
much as we hope to see the River transcend its present degraded
condition. Krall is an artist and Musso a professor of public
policy.
