Deborah Thomas work as a non-representational painter and a mixed
media artist is grounded in contemplative practice. Her process involves
observation, an involved yet detached interaction with the materials
at hand, and an intuitive identification with the way a work of art
can communicate by non-conventional means. Deborah works paint by loosely
layering delicate acrylic washes, dry pigments and oil on canvas and
spun polyester. In her mixed media work using nature photos she explores
formal and material relationships by juxtaposing snapshots, paint and
natural materials. Conceptually, her work explores non-conventional
and non-traditional approaches to painting, landscape and the environment.
She also produces site-specific installations.
Deborah has pursued studies in music and American Civilization in
addition to art history. As a fine artist, she studied the méthode Martenot
in Switzerland and worked with Richard Pousette-Dart in New York before
arriving in Los Angeles 10 years ago. Her work has been exhibited nationally
and abroad.
