Day of the Dead Altars at Acorn Gallery Acorn Gallery celebrates Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos, with Offerings/Ofrendas, October 29 to November 5. Death is part of the cycle of life. Every culture has a way of honoring the deceased. Many rituals overlap, are similar or the same. For the Chinese memorial day, Ching Ming, like the Mexican’s Dia de los Muertos, we go to the cemetery, to offer food, drink and the deceased’s favorites and more. Of course, for most of us, flowers are the minimum. Eight artists will be featured in this brief exhibition. Natalie Kahn Aguilar and Victoria Taylor Alvarez will partner to do a altar, as well as Ruth De Nicola and Heather Hoggan. Deborah Thomas’ working title Matrilinear, is a reflection of her family’s female ancestral line, following the death of her mother. Included in her offering will be images, recipes, stories, flowers and objects, remembering those relatives. Cidne Hart will create a photographic paper tapestry based on her Marys, Madonna, and Mannequins series. Mary Sargeant will present a quilt and Nancy Ann Jones will exhibit her monoprints. Both artists use Day of the Dead imagery and symbolism. Special joint receptions with Avenue 50 Studio, Blue Gallery and other Highland Park galleries were held Wednesday evening, November 2, 7 to 10PM.
