Mount Washington Plein Air Painters | December 3, 2005 - January 14, 2006

The Arroyo Arts Collective presents the Mount Washington Plein Air Painters at the Acorn Gallery. A reception was held on Saturday, December 10 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Artists featured are John Byram, Ann Dudrow, Wayne Hunt, Jose L. de Juan, Olivia G. Rodriguez, Kevin Spitze, and Richard Willson. The artists represent a range of styles, landscape painting in oil and watercolor.

The group follows in the tradition of Mt. Washington book clubs, musical collaborations, and salons. The group has covered much of Mt. Washington, from San Rafael to Kite Hill and many places in between but continue to find great painting locations in the topographically and architecturally varied hills of Mt. Washington. While occasionally leaving the hill, the group always finds a spot that looks back at Mt. Washington, from locations such as the L.A. River or Debs Park.

The Mount Washington Plein Air Painters have found a way to make painting a part of their weekly rhythm— their families know that it’s on the agenda for Saturday afternoons. By working within the same territory, they are able to reflect the way in which changes in light and atmospheric conditions and seasonal vegetation affect the painting experience. Each fall draws them to a particularly vivid gingko tree, while winter brings appreciation for the verdant green of the first grasses. Spring brings varied colors in flowering trees, while summer changes their palettes to the subtle colors of dried grasses.

The Acorn Gallery is located at 135 North Avenue 50 in Highland Park. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Day of the Dead Altars at Acorn Gallery

Acorn Gallery celebrates Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos, with Offerings/Ofrendas, October 29 to November 5. Death is part of the cycle of life. Every culture has a way of honoring the deceased. Many rituals overlap, are similar or the same. For the Chinese memorial day, Ching Ming, like the Mexican’s Dia de los Muertos, we go to the cemetery, to offer food, drink and the deceased’s favorites and more.

Of course, for most of us, flowers are the minimum. Eight artists will be featured in this brief exhibition. Natalie Kahn Aguilar and Victoria Taylor Alvarez will partner to do a altar, as well as Ruth De Nicola and Heather Hoggan. Deborah Thomas’ working title Matrilinear, is a reflection of her family’s female ancestral line, following the death of her mother. Included in her offering will be images, recipes, stories, flowers and objects, remembering those relatives. Cidne Hart will create a photographic paper tapestry based on her Marys, Madonna, and Mannequins series. Mary Sargeant will present a quilt and Nancy Ann Jones will exhibit her monoprints. Both artists use Day of the Dead imagery and symbolism.

Special joint receptions with Avenue 50 Studio, Blue Gallery and other Highland Park galleries were held Wednesday evening, November 2, 7 to 10PM.

seems familiar: a collaborative exhibition
Acorn Gallery 135 N. Avenue 50, Highland Park, CA 90042

Artists Edith Abeyta and Betsy Lohrer Hall collected cast off clothing as well as stories and memories associated with clothing for Seems Familiar, a collaborative, participatory exhibition at Acorn Gallery in Highland Park in July. During the course of the exhibition participants were invited to bring in clothing, contribute a story or memory, to exchange an item of clothing for another, and/or to participate in the weaving together of the clothes to create large, soft sculptures. At the closing, the sculptures were dismantled and the clothing dispersed to local charities.

Donated clothes were woven together to create large, soft sculptures.
