Artists’ Statements

Steven L. Anderson is an artist and Co-Publisher of Cakewalk Magazine, a Los Angeles-based art journal. Steve’s artwork explores the psychogeography of Southern California and looks to the region's rugged desert plants as allies in the struggle against an environmentally destructive economic system.

Cidne Hart produces graphic design and creates computer collages often using images of female saints, devotional candles and cactus. She prints her collages on natural fiber papers and attaches them to glass candles, terra cotta tiles and aluminum plates.

Kevin Hass finds and photographs scenes not usually singled out as areas of exceptional significance. He uses a conventional medium format camera with film and makes his own large color prints in a darkroom.

Fruit-ied to 3D

Summer is the time we Californians turn to fruit—icy pink watermelon, juicy cherries, sweet peaches, tart pineapples—fruit salad, fruit tart, fruit sorbet. Now, along with those delicious items appearing on our menus, we can see them celebrated in painting, collage, watercolor and photography at Fruit-ied to 3D, the Arroyo Arts Collective’s summer exhibit at the Collective @ Avenue 50 Gallery, 135 N. Avenue 50.

Curator Joanne Chase-Mattillo has selected eighteen artists, some new to AAC shows and some familiar names. There will be a few surprises in the 3D department, and the expanded definition of fruit allows for some quirky art that might not fit in a bowl. Artists in the exhibition are Kireilyn Barber, Joanne Chase-Mattillo, Kevin Hass, Cidne Hart, Heather Hoggan, Natalie Kahn, Deborah Kashinsky, Ariel Kirel, Maria Leon, Joseph William Oliver, Benette Rottman, Rodolfo Salgado, Leslie Schumann, Dorothy Shepherd, Nancy Spiller, Zolita Sverdlove, and Abram Verdin.

Fruit-ied to 3D debuts with a reception for the artists on Friday, July 11, from 7 to 10pm. The exhibit has been extended through October 5. Exhibition hours are Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4pm. Artists can pick up magnets for the Discovery Tour during these hours also.

Our deepest thanks to Joanne Chase-Matillo for being our first guest curator and putting together this handsome exhibit in our space. For more information, call 323.850.8566.

J. MICHAEL WALKER: “All the Saints of the Western Valley”— March 23 through April 13, 2003

In Fall, 2000, AAC artist J. Michael Walker began his exploration of the cultural heritage of Los Angeles, installing in city bus shelters large-scale prints of his portrayals of “All the Saints of the City of the Angels.”

Now J. Michael has taken the artifacts from that installation — weather-faded iris/giclee prints on vinyl-like paper — and endowed them with vibrant color and layered reinterpretations of the street/saints in our neighborhood.
