Earth Alchemy

THE ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION OF MEMBERS OF THE ARROYO ARTS COLLECTIVE

April 16– May 19, 2002
Avenue 50 Studio, 131 N. Ave. 50, Highland Park

alchemy – 1) pouring together; 2) the doctrine, study and practice of chemistry in the Middle Ages, which was chiefly concerned with transmutation of metals into gold and the finding of a universal remedy for diseases; 3) any imaginary power or process of transmuting one thing into another.

Earth Alchemy features gallery hung work thematically linked to the Collective’s concurrent installation project on the Los Angeles River, River Alchemy. Artists have submitted work which creatively refers to the environment or utilizes relevant materials (recycled or natural) in innovative, transformational ways.

Patricia Watts, founder of ecoartspace, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to environmental awareness, served as juror; she is also education coordinator for the Topanga Creek Watershed.
