"Catherine's Wheels"

St. Catherine of Alexandria, patron saint of young maidens and female students, was once considered to be one of the fourteen most helpful saints. According to medieval legend, the third century Christian martyr was flogged and imprisoned by the emperor Maximinus after she had embarrassed him by converting his best philosophers to her faith. When she next converted the empress, the enraged Maximinus condemned to death all Christians except Catherine.

Maximinus then asked the learned and beautiful Catherine to marry him. When she refused, he sentenced her to die upon the wheel. When the spiked wheels that were supposed to have torn her apart were destroyed by a miraculous fire, the emperor ordered Catherine beheaded.
